Brooklyn Rooftop Botanicals is…
New York City’s first and only rooftop beauty farm that spans over three rooftops (2K sq ft) and grows and processes over 50 beauty botanicals to create extracts and beauty products out of.
An online education space where people can learn about raw materials, how they’re grown or made, how they’re processed and how they end up in the products you use on a day-to-day basis.
A community where people can link up with friends and family, old and new, to get inspired with new ideas, to take on a challenge and take steps to shop more locally and live more sustainability when it comes to beauty.

Our Farming Practices
We employ natural farming practices on all our rooftops which helps promote a diverse ecosystem. By reducing the amount of human intervention with the application of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, our botanicals become enriched with nutrients and provide the maximum of health benefits to every participant in our ecosystem–from the smallest insects to our end user!
We harvest, wash thoroughly and then dehydrate our botanicals and pack into reusable bags. Once ready to process, we disinfect all our lab equipment and space with 99% Isopropyl alcohol, weigh the botanicals out and process them into extracts, oil infusions and hydrosols. We use a preservative made of sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate that are both on the whole foods, credo beauty and Sephora clean ingredient lists to ensure our extracts stay safe throughout the extraction process.
Our Testing Practices
Once processed, our extracts then go to a lab in New Jersey for testing where we perform the below tests to certify their safety and use in topical applications. Once the tests have been performed and approved, the extracts are then sent to our manufacturing facility, also in New Jersey, where they’re then used in production. After production, our products go in for a second round of testing for all the below to ensure the production process is also done without contamination.
USP <61> - Determines if sample is already contaminated or if it has a high number if bacteria, yeast, mold and fungi
USP <62> - Determines the presence or absence of a specified list of microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
(AET) <51> - Shows whether the preservative we’re using will protect our samples from future microbial contamination
Heavy Metal – A test that shows levels of lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and chromium in a sample
Our Commitment To Sustainability
Brooklyn Rooftop Botanical’s mission is to help make NYC and the beauty industry greener and more beautiful places.
Sustainability is our absolute end goal, but to really make long term changes, we must realize that it’s a process and not everything can be perfect from the start, so every day we’re working to improve our systems, reduce waste, and increase our impact.
By growing our own botanicals to make skincare products out of, we’re bringing our raw materials closer to home which means we’re reducing the amount of carbon emissions that were previously used to grow, process, transport and produce those same botanicals grown halfway around the world.
By also immensely shortening the supply chain process and growing our botanicals closer to home, we hope to reduce the beauty industry’s carbon footprint by bringing the value back to the customer.
